Emperor Penguin

These awesome aquatic birds feed at sea and hunt fish, squid and tiny shrimp-like animals called krill. Emperor Penguins swallow their prey whole while swimming and may cover up to 903 mi. (1,450 km.) in a single feeding trip. Although they love to eat, Emperor’s go through a 90-120 day fasting period during courtship, breeding, and the incubation period. Before this, they build a fat layer that provides enough energy to get through the fast. These penguins may be able to withstand sub-zero weather, but they’re no match for global threats like pollution and habitat destruction. Plus, the food penguins eat is often over-fished. No matter where you live, you can help by only eating sustainable seafood.
