Opossum’s are North America’s only mammal marsupials, which mean that females have a pouch for their young, just like Kangaroo’s. The mother opossum carries and nurses her young in her pound until they are 2-3 months old. Opossum’s have a bad rep for being aggressive – they hiss, they growl, they show off their 50+ super shard teeth – but they really only do these things when frightened. In fact, normally they prefer to avoid confrontations altogether. However, opossums face great challenges from people, cars, and our pets. To help, slow down and watch for wildlife when in the car, and don’t let pets roam from home to protect the wildlife in your backyard.
